PARKING GARAGE
LIGHTING RETROFIT CASE STUDY
SITUATION
Wellesley College is a liberal arts institution of 2,300
students, located outside Boston in Wellesley, MA.
The lighting system inside their 400,000 sq. ft. parking
garage consisted of 410 Metal Halide HID based light
fixtures. Although the HID lamps were bright when
initially installed, their light output depreciated rapidly,
leaving many areas of the garage dim and under lit.
Additionally, with 10,000 hour rated life spans and
failures due to structural vibration during snow plowing,
system wide annual relamping was a necessity. With their
cold weather location, linear fluorescents fixtures were
not a viable alternative both because of their poor cold
temperature performance and their need for drilling
ceiling holes into this post-tensioned concrete garage.
Wellesley management hoped to upgrade this system
to increase light quality, lower energy costs and reduce
on-going maintenance requirements.
PROJECT
Groom Energy installed its UL listed and patented CFL
retrofit kit into the existing Metal Halide fixtures.
Requiring only 15 minutes per fixture to install, the
project was completed in two weeks, without any
disruption to the parking operation of the garage.
Groom Energy also ensured that the project was eligible
and received a utility incentive of $24,600 from the
electric utility.
RESULTS
The retrofit project reduced the lighting system’s energy
consumption by 57%, increased light levels by 32%, and
doubled the fixture’s lamp life.
