GHG INVENTORY/CARBON FOOTPRINT
CASE STUDY

SITUATION
Dot Foods is the largest food redistributor in the United States
serving distributors coast to coast on a daily basis. Dot operates
8 large distribution centers and a fleet of over 900 trucks. As
part of its sustainability efforts, one of the measureable goals
Dot Foods established was to clearly define its company
carbon footprint.

PROJECT
The Sustainability Team at Dot worked with Groom Energy to
assemble the data and calculate the company carbon footprint
for years 2008-2010. Groom Energy also developed a carbon
footprint tracking spreadsheet that Dot Foods can use to
track their footprint in upcoming years . The footprint was
calculated in compliance with industry standards and included
scope 1, scope 2 and a select number of items for scope 3.
The project also looked at GHG emissions intensity metrics.

RESULTS
The carbon footprint project enabled Dot Foods to better
understand the areas of its operations which have the
biggest environmental impact and to use this information
to prioritize investments and initiatives. Additionally,
Dot Foods now has a complete company footprint should
customers or suppliers request carbon data as part of
their supply chain sustainability initiative efforts.
